KOCHI: According to reports drug abuse and alcoholism are spreading among school students and many of the city schools have a percentage of students who are addicted to the dangerous habit. In order to spread awareness and resolve the issue CBSE schools have come forward with a programme. The schools have formed a committee to tackle the issue and its major objective is to keep the students away from drugs and alcohol.“As per a survey conducted in various schools in the state the new generation is virtually addicted to drugs. There are more than 20 varieties of drugs that are easily available in shops functioning near the schools,” says president of All-Kerala CBSE School Management Association T P M Ibrahim Khan. The survey points to the fact that the victims include even 10-year-old students and the percentage of high school and Plus-Two students who use drugs is alarmingly high. The findings of the survey show that a percentage of students regularly use drugs and alcohol on the school premises and also at school events and parties. The students start with less dangerous stuff like drug mixed chocolates and later move on to hard drugs. “In the second stage children take highly dangerous drugs like hashish,” he said. As part of the anti-drug campaign it has been decided to form core groups in every school. “The first stage is to create awareness among the student community on how hazardous drug use is. All the students will have to take an anti- drug oath promising to keep away from drugs. If drug users are identified they will be properly counselled and brought back to normal life,” he said. The first phase of the campaign involves awareness classes and other programmes to reach out to the students. “Other activities to keep the students away from drugs will follow. The government has extended its support to make the campaign a success,” he said.
