It is learnt that the Irrigation Department which was entrusted with the cleaning of the Champakara canal at the proposed boat jetty at Vyttila has not yet started work on it.
“The Irrigation Department was entrusted with the work three months ago. Unless, it completes the work on a time-bound manner, the work of the entire boat jetty won’t move at the expected pace and we will be forced to extend the time for completion of the boat jetty further,” said an official with VMHS.
He said that once the work on the external parts of the boat jetty begins, the Department will be forced to delay its work.
“Since both the works will clash, it will be difficult to carry out the work. We have requested the Irrigation Department officials to immediately start work in this regard,” he said.
Hari Narayanan, executive engineer, district Irrigation (Major) division, agreed that a delay has cropped up in the execution of the work.
“The constraints were caused due to financial reasons. There were many pending funds from other projects to be handed over to the contractor who was also awarded the work. However, we have seen to it that the contractor has been paid. We expect that the cleaning will start this week,” he said.
The Irrigation Department has drawn an estimate of around Rs 40,000 for the project.
