As several of them were unaware of the ban on bulk SMS and MMS to prevent the spread of rumours pertaining to the Assam problem, it came as a rude surprise. The regulation states that no more than five SMSes should be sent in one go; the maximum size of an MMS should only be 20 KB. However, service providers like Vodafone and Aircel restricted their customers from sending more than five messages even on a person-to-person basis, whereas Airtel customers did not have any such restraints. Nikhat Jahan, an architect, said that the move, while inconvenient, was understandable. “It is sad that our country has come to this level, when the Government has to resort to such measures to prevent panic. But since it is only till September 2, it is a small sacrifice to make,” she said.Other irate users, however, took to social media sites to vent their anger. Several people posted articles on Facebook, captioned, “What’s wrong with TRAI?”Twitter too had its share of TRAI bashing. One user, @Ashwin_XK, tweeted, “Idhukaagava booster poten?? (Is this why I paid for a booster pack?) #TRAI.” On a serious note, @BwoyBlunder said, “By the way, Govt of India, the 5 SMS limit prevents NorthEast folks frm forwarding info 2 their family in home town. #TRAI.”Others had a more tongue-in-cheek approach to the situation, as @kevinchristoz tweeted, “Dear girls, if a boy sends you 5 #SMS in the next few days, marry him.” As a hat tip to the recent Batman movie, and to the internet based messaging services that remain unlimited and are currently serving as the lifeline for avid texters, @sirchinkalot said, “BBM and Whatsapp rises.”first published:August 19, 2012, 08:57 ISTlast updated:August 19, 2012, 08:57 IST
