Transgenders to get pension
CM also launches scheme to give clothes for KG kids

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday inaugurated a government  scheme to provide clothes to kindergarten students in government-run anganwadis across the State. She also inaugurated a scheme to provide pensions to transgenders over the age of 40.

The government had earlier announced both these schemes in the Assembly. The project to provide two pairs of clothing to children between the ages of two and five began with the CM herself distributing the clothes to seven children.

The first phase of the project would be implemented in Chennai, Vellore, Tiruchy, Theni and Dindugul districts. The scheme is expected to benefit 2,01,032 children - 1,02,540 boys and 98,492 girls - across the State at a cost of Rs 4.3 crore.

Jayalalithaa also inaugurated a scheme to provide a pension of `1000 per month to poor, destitute transgenders over the age of 40.

The Transgenders Welfare Board is in the process of identifying beneficiaries and issuing ID cards.

So far, 3125 identity cards have been issued, and the pension would be provided to those transgenders over the age of 40. The Chief Minister inaugurated these schemes at the Secretariat in the presence of Social Werlfare Minister B Valarmathi, Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Programme secretary Ashok Dongre, Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Programme director B Jothi Nirmala and other senior officials.
