CHENNAI: You’ll never guess what the guy who scored the music for Kollywood flick Leelai is up to these days. Satish Chakravarthy, who debuted with Andrew Louis’s Leelai, which hit screens last week, is now making tunes for toons. “I’ve been doing a lot of work for the background music for Disney Animation India’s cartoons and I’m enjoying it quite a bit,” says the composer, who has apprenticed under A R Rahman. “I use the voices of many talented young singers from Chennai, especially the kids from shows like (Vijay TV’s) Super Singer Junior. It’s a great experience working with all these kids who love teen pop to make songs for cartoons,” he adds.Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of RED, an inter-corporate cultural festival for which he has composed the theme song, he says he was happy that the song was released on YouTube, “Leelai’s music got the most honest critiquing and appreciation on YouTube, so I guess this is the best way to see how good your work is.”The song was launched on the website by actor Sonia Agarwal who, along with several film personalities like Gautham Menon, G V Prakash, K S Ravikumar and G Venket Ram, will judge the event in June. Close to 80 corporates are expected to be battling it out in competitions in music, dance, fashion and on-the-spot events like Adzap.Speaking about Leelai, which was in the making for nearly three years, Satish says “It’s almost funny, but I work best right after the director shares the script with me. When Andrew (Louis) told me the story, that evening we headed to the studio and came up with Jillunu Oru Kalavaram. We liked it so much that we retained the original take in the movie,” he reveals. On the film front, Satish says that he has his hands full at the moment, “I am working on the music for an untitled Telugu film,” he reveals. One schedule of that film has been completed, he says. But the toons and a Telugu movie can’t keep him away from his personal studio. “I’m working on a song with Betty Jardin, Neil Mukherjee’s wife, and we’re hoping to release it soon,” he adds, “I’ve always fancied doing an album with Shreya Ghoshal. So hopefully, that will work out next,” he smiles.
