New Delhi: Twitter reportedly is experimenting with a new feature that would make it easier for users to use hashtags in their tweets. According to The Wall Street Journal, the new feature adds an expanded label to some hashtags. For instance, search for #tbt and the results will appear with "Throwback Thursday" written underneath the hashtag. Other such hashtags include #smh (Shaking My Head) or #oitnb (TV series "Orange Is The New Black").
This labelling is believed to give hashtags a sense of legitimacy. The new feature is said to have been observed by The Wall Street Journal in the Twitter app for iOS.
Twitter has not officially announced any such update. Also, there is no information as to when the company will roll out the update to users worldwide.
The hashtag, which appears as the # symbol, makes it easier for users to follow specific topics of conversation within the ever-changing stream of comments posted on Twitter. Users type the hashtag alongside a keyword - such as #election - at the end of a Tweet, making it easy to group comments on the same topic.
The hashtag has proven to be a handy system for social networking users to join online conversations as events unfold in real-time, such as political debates, television shows and sports. And it provides an easy way for advertisers to reach a particular audience.
