PALAKKAD: The UDF lost ground in Chittur block panchayat, as its ally, Socialist Janatha(Democratic) joined hands with the CPM.The SJ(D) voted in favour of the no-confidence motion, causing the incumbent president K Goplasawmy of the Congress to resign. The motion was moved by the SJ(D) and was supported by the CPM. It was passed with nine votes in support, and only five votes against it.In the 14-member block panchayat, the Congress has five members, the SJ(D) five, and the CPM four. The proceedings were held in the presence of secretary in-charge of the district panchayat Zakir Hussein.Gopalaswamy said that the UDF had issued a whip, and the SJ(D), which was part of the UDF in the local body elections should have supported it. He said that he was unaware as to why the state leadership of the SJ(D) had not issued any directions. He said that, he would register a complaint with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala on the action of the SJ (D), which was still part of the UDF.
