The statue of eminent geologist, P N Bose, located at Armoury road crossing in Jamshedpur was vandalised by miscreants, the police said on Friday.
In a press statement, Tata Steel said they had been deeply pained and hurt with this attempt of damaging the memorial of the legendary geologist on Thursday night.
This act of disrespect to a legend whose contribution to the nation in a way led to the birth of this steel city and the Tata Steel legacy is a concern as it defies the very value system the citizens of Jamshedpur are proud, the statement said.
Bose was the first Indian graduate in science from a British University. He discovered petroleum in Assam. He was the first to set up a soap factory in India and had written to Tata Steel founder J N Tata on February 24, 1904 informing of rich iron ore deposits in Mayurbhanj. His discovery led to the establishment of Iron ~~amp;amp; Steel plant at Sakchi in Jamshedpur.
Tata Steel observed 159th birth anniversary of Bose, who was born on 12 May, 1855 in a remote Galpur village of Nadia district in West Bengal.
The police did not rule out the possibility of an abortive attempt to steal the metallic bust of Bose by the miscreants, who damaged the plaque of the statue.
Meanwhile, Tata Steel began renovation and beautification of the statue.
