Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been quick to voice his objection to the Union Cabinet ordinance postponing the Supreme Court order, which made NEET compulsory, by a year.
He reiterated his stand that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical courses is needed to maintain quality in medical education.
"I sincerely urge Modiji not to bring any ordinance to overturn SC order on NEET," he tweeted. He wrote to Modi claiming that hard working and diligent students missed out on opportunities for quality medical education as students from affluent families got into through donations.
"This is why the apex court’s ruling on the matter should not be challenged or questioned," he reasoned in a letter to Modi.
"It has come to my attention that the Centre is making plans to overturn the decision by the Supreme Court. People have been tensed upon hearing this news. The people of the nation will be cheated if the Centre goes through with this decision. Just a few days ago, Union Health Minister JP Nadda called a meeting over the issue, where almost all health ministers opposed NEET, except Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain," the letter stated.
"It is also being said that many politicians are running their own private medical colleges, in which some institutions are indulging in the practice of accepting large donations, which is why they were vehemently against the NEET examinations," he further wrote.
"It is my humble request to you to ensure that no orders are brought against the Supreme Court ruling in the matter, otherwise people will think that the Centre stand with those who garner black money," Kejriwal said.
Satyendra Jain also raised his objection and said, "The intention is not to come to a consensus but to bring an ordinance. It is very sad that efforts are being made to postpone the SC order. There are many accusations that medical education is being sold. I oppose the Centre's move."
The Union Cabinet had earlier on Friday passed the ordinance to postpone the Supreme Court order, which made NEET compulsory, by a year.
There were three objections against NEET from 2016. They are - most of the aspirants had been preparing according to the old syllabus, many of them were from regional language boards and the time was too less to adapt to the new format.
In its order, the SC had scrapped medical entrance tests by individual states, colleges and universities and backed NEET. The exam for the current year will be conducted in the older format.
The Cabinet took the decision after students had protested against the SC order. The medical aspirants who were ready for exams in regional languages had claimed that they did not have enough time to prepare for the admission through the new format.
Most students feel that the exam should be conducted in regional languages otherwise they claim, it gives English medium students an unfair advantage.
