US has assured India it would fulfill all commitments made in the joint statements with regard to the civil nuclear deal.

Washington: The United States has assured India that it would fulfill all the commitments with regard to the civil nuclear deal made in the July 18, 2005 and March 2, 2006 joint statements.

"The US intends to fulfill all of the commitments it made to India in the July 18 and March 2 Joint Statements," said Rice ahead of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement in Parliament and the signing of the legislation by President George W Bush.

Rice said the bill, which goes to the US President's desk for his signature, explicitly authorizes civil nuclear cooperation with India in a manner fully consistent with the US-India Joint Statements of July 18, 2005 and March 2, 2006.

Rice welcomed the "the strong bipartisan support for the US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation initiative shown by the Congress in adopting the legislation of the Henry J Hyde US-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act of 2006."

"The US looks forward to working closely with India on implementing all aspects of the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative, and also to working further with Congress to translate this vision into practice" she said.

The remarks by Secretary of State, who played a key role in steering the legislation through the Congress, after the legislation allowing nuclear trade between India and the US sailed through by a thumping majority in the House of Representatives and unanimously in the Senate.
