UT government steps in to fight Diabetes

The government on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation, Bangalore, for a diabetes control programme.

The MoU was signed between Health and Family Welfare Director Dr K V Raman and Novo Nordisk Education Foundation Managing Trustee Melvin Oscar D’Souza in the presence Chief Minister N Rangasamy.

Titled “Changing Diabetes Barometer Project”, the programme would create mass awareness about diabetes and have screening programmes, training workshops for medical professionals, improving treatment with focus on reducing complications and working towards making the Union Territory free from diabetes-related amputation and blindness.

During the signing of the MoU, Rangasamy stressed the importance of creating awareness about diabetes among the people.

Around 62 million Indians suffered from diabetes. The economic cost of fighting diabetes was estimated to be about 2.1 per cent of the GDP.
