BANGALORE: If everything goes well, officials working at zonal offices of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) need not have to run to the central office every time to attend a meeting with higher authorities. The Standing Committee on Administrative Reforms is planning to send a circular to all zonal officials to make use of video conferencing facility and make it compulsory. Though video conferencing facility is available in all zones, it is not yet made mandatory. After BBMP was formed in 2007 by merging the then Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), along with seven City Municipal Councils (CMC), one Town Municipal Council (TMC, Kengeri) and 111 villages around Bangalore, administration process became tedious. The number of zones increased from four to eight, making officials, especially who are working in zones, to run from their office to central office for meetings.According to official sources, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike introduced the facility a couple of years ago in all the zones. “It was used initially. Later, the officials did not use the facility and continued the same old method of running between central office and their zone office,” sources said.Meanwhile, the authorities are planning to streamline the system. H R Krishnappa, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Administrative Reforms, said that they are now planning to send a circular to all the zones utilise the video conferencing system. “The officials are not using it,” he said.According to Krishnappa, with video conferencing system, the officials can save time, money and fuel. “The higher officials are just a click away and there is no need for them to travel all the way to central office. Instead, let them utilise the same time to interact with the local citizen problems,” he observed. Krishnappa further said he will bring the issue to the notice of the committee and later to the council. “It will be made mandatory,” he stated.
