HYDERABAD: The Telangana Merger Day turned violent in Warangal, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and some other districts on Saturday as T activists tried to hoist the national flag in government offices. More than 700 activists were arrested for clashing with the police who obstructed them.
Telangana activists including employees, political activists and students tried to unfurl the national flag at government offices and major junctions. While they peacefully hoisted the national flag at many places, their attempts to repeat the act at the Police Parade Grounds and police stations led to violence. The police resorted to lathicharge to control the mob and arrested the agitators. Interestingly, it was the turn of the BJP cadre to actively participate in the T Merger Day celebrations even as the TRS remained comparatively calm.The police also prevented T activists from unfurling the national flag at the RDO office at Bhongir in Nalgonda district. A cop was beaten up by the mob for allegedly bashing up an activist. BJP state executive member Bhaskar was also severely injured in the incident.
In Nizamabad, T activists tried to lay siege to the police headquarters and hoist the national flag but were prevented by cops. They were arrested and released on personal bond. Former minister J Krishna Rao was arrested at Shadnagar in Mahaboobnagar district while he was on his way to unfurl the national flag.The villagers of Gottimukkula in Pedasankarampeta mandal and Singeetham in Raikode mandal refused to pay their electricity bills till an announcement is made granting statehood to Telangana. They locked up the officials for a few hours before letting them out.KARIMNAGAR: Similar attempts by BJP and ABVP leaders led to their arrests in Karimnagad town. BJP leaders tried to barge into the district collectorate and the Police Parade Grounds where the police erected huge barricades to prevent crowds. While BJP Kisan Morcha national secretary P Sugunakar Rao, BJP state vicepresident and district president Meesa Arjun Rao and other leaders were arrested while trying to hoist national flag, four students were injured in police lathicharged The arrested were taken to the District Police Training Centre on the town outskirts.In the morning, ABVP students went in a procession from TChowk to the collectorate before being arrested. People participated in the celebrations across the district in large numbers. At the DCC office and his camp office, Karimanagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar hoisted the national flag. As many as 50 Telangana poets and writers marched from TChowk to the Telangana Talli statue. Meanwhile, rallies, protests and demonstrations in support of the employees' strike continued for the fifth consecutive day in the district. About 300 families in Makoda village in Jainath mandal participated in a daylong hunger strike. In Kagaznagar, TJAC and TRS leaders ransacked the Forest Development Corporation's office where employees were working while the building remained locked from outside.
