BANGALORE: Gallery Time and Space presents Recent & Retrospective – a gallery of more than 100 artworks by Shuvaprasanna.The show will be displaying sculptures and paintings from the past 30 years of his artistic life.Recent & Retrospective has travelled across many cities in the country.It started in Delhi then moved to Mumbai, Hyderabad and now Bangalore.Gallery Time and Space started as an experimental venture that sought to understand and appreciate the esoteric and dynamic ethos of contemporary art and to encourage people to participate in its magical world.This time they bring the works of Shuvaprasanna. Shuvaprasanna was born in Kolkata in 1947.He graduated from the Indian College of Arts in 1969.He was an active member of the ‘Calcutta Painters’ group.The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work.His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu – its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony.In the 1960s and 1970s his work was influenced by the turbulence and political violence of Kolkata.He has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive.In terms of technique, he boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity.He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media.Shuvaprasanna’s series of paintings, icons and illusions, marked a creative breakthrough for the artist in a number of ways.In the past he had been known as an urban artist with subject matter that reflected the byways, alleyways, birds, and people of his native Kolkata.The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha have found lyrical expression in through his art.His work has been exhibited extensively in India and internationally in the United States, Bangladesh, Singapore , France , Switzerland, and Germany.He has won a number of awards to add on to his name.The artwork will be displayed from September 5 at Galleries 1,2 and 3 of the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.
