Jaipur: As Waheeda Rehman went up on the stage with her biographer, filmmaker Nasreen Munni Kabir, the leaking Mughal tent at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2015, erupted into thunderous applause for the beautiful actress. The session which was moderated by Arshia Sattar was a rather candid session with Waheeda Rehman speaking from her heart about her foray into films, Guru Dutt and her unusual friendship with Abhishek Bachchan.
When Sattar asked her how she had managed all this while to be friends with fellow actors, the veteran actress replied, "Maybe the concept of jealousy didn't exist for me. I had accepted what God had in store for me, I never had to eye others' projects so that helped." Sattar asked who among Bollywood she considered her friend, and Waheeda said, "Nanda. It is unfortunate that she passed away an year back, but we were close. Had been friends with her for many years."
Sattar then asked, if she is friendly with anyone from the current lot. Waheeda Rehman though for a while and said, "They don't have time. Plus there is a generation gap with all of them. But I am friends with Abhishek Bachchan. Have known his family for a long time, Amitabh has been a friend even before he got married to Jaya. So the Bachchans are close."
Perhaps gauging the thoughts running through most of the audience's mind, Sattar asked, "I am curious to know what sort of conversation you have with Abhishek Bachchan?" To which the beautiful actress smiled and said, "Mostly I tell him about his films- on how he should have approached it. He is a very sweet boy, he sits with me and patiently listens."
Listing 'Guide' as her favourtite film, Waheeda Rehman also revealed that how Guru Dutt did not want her to play the role of 'Jaba' in Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam as she was already an established heroine by then. "I did not have a problem playing the second lead to Meena Kumari, because I loved the character of 'Jaba' a lot. I fought my way into the film."
