CHENNAI: As a curtain raiser to the World Veterinary Year celebrations, the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) organised a ‘Science Walk’ in the city to create awareness among the public about the integral role of veterinarians in their daily lives.As part of the event, about 650 school students carried placards and raised slogans about the contribution of veterinarians in safeguarding the health of animals and the need for awareness on protection of animal rights. Led by the Vice Chancellor of TANUVAS, Dr R Prabhakaran, the youngsters walked from Anna Square to Vivekanandar Illam to pledge their support to veterinarians.Speaking to City Express about the initiative, Dr SR Srinivasan, Dean of TANUVAS, said, “Since 2011 has been designated as world veterinary year, we are organising more than 40 programmes, including seminars and conferences, this year to highlight the role of veterinarians in the society. The science walk was a part of the initiative to educate and sensitise school students about veterinary science,” he said.The event was presided over by the Secretary, Tamil Nadu Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Vice-chancellor R Prabhakaran and actor Shakthi Vasu.The ‘Science walk’ is a precursor to an array of programmes scheduled for the veterinary educational exhibition to be held at Madras Veterinary College from July 29 to August 1. The exhibition will include events such as quiz contests, pet shows, essay competitions on biotechnology, painting competitions on environment protection and a panel discussion on the role of veterinarians.
