New Delhi: Bollywood's fashionista Sonam Kapoor might have been seen in innumerable de-glam roles on the silver screen but playing a school girl in 'Raanjhanaa' has been a novel experience for the actress.
"It was a new experience for me to shoot as a school girl in the film. In our school, we were not allowed to wear skirts. We used to wear Nehru pants and shirts, so it was not like revisiting my school days. In fact, it was a novelty for me to see myself in school skirt," she said.
However, it was not just the costume that made Sonam Kapoor pick up the role but she also thoroughly prepared for it by taking inspiration from Hrishikesh Mukherjee's much acclaimed film 'Guddi'.
"I wanted a starting point to prepare for my character and I could only think of Jaya Bachchan in 'Guddi'. I took the spunk and body language from her character in 'Guddi'," added Sonam.
Despite taking inspiration from 'Guddi', 'Raanjhanaa's' story is nothing close to the Mukherjee's classic. And, Sonam Kapoor loved playing the role of Zoya who gets unconditional love from Kundan (Dhanush). "Raanjhanaa is about never giving up on love. It is crazy and dysfunctional, but at the end, it is love. I would love to be loved the way Zoya is loved in 'Raanjhanaa'. I like the way Kundan keeps pursuing Zoya all the while and doesn't give up on his love for her", she said.
Sonam believes that people give up on love very easily and the film would instill their faith in love. And, at the same time, she is confident that many would identify with her role in the film as she herself could connect with it. "Zoya is a middle class girl who is very headstrong and emotional. On that level, I do connect with her. I may not be perfect and have many layers to my personality. When Zoya falls in love she believes in it and feels strongly about it. Love is complicated as I believe in it too, like her, but very few people like her have the courage to take a stand."
Moreover, Sonam Kapoor is not just impressed with the character Kundan in the film but the actress is all praises for her co-star Dhanush as well, who makes his Bollywood debut with 'Raanjhanaa'. "It is nice to work with someone with so much humility. Dhanush might be shy and quiet but there is dynamic talent behind all of this. It is great to work with someone who is so good at his craft. I have learnt a lot from him."
However, Sonam would not be just sharing the screen space with Dhanush in the film; in fact she will also be seen with her 'Aisha' co-star Abhay Deol. Though there have been reports of a tiff between the two during the release of 'Aisha', it seems the two have now mended ways. "I would not be working with Abhay if I had a problem. In fact, it was great working with Abhay again", she said.
