New Delhi: A diet pill widely available in the UK is said to increase suicidal thoughts and depression, with users also experiencing other side effects such as sleeplessness and anxiety, reports The Daily Mail.
In the US an influential health panel has recommended against approval for the weight loss pill Acomplia, known as Zimulti in the US.
In an unanimous vote an advisory committee said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should reject the proposed pill, called Zimulti in the United States, because of concerns it could increase suicidal thinking and depression.
In the UK, the pill is not yet available on the NHS, as it has not yet received approval from NICE, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. However Acomplia can be bought on a private prescription and has been available to buy in the UK since last June.
Sanofi had initially hoped to launch Acomplia, chemically known as rimonabant, in the second quarter of 2006 in the United States, the world's biggest drug market.
In the past it has forecast peak annual sales of $3 billion or more for the drug.
Sanofi, which sells Acomplia in 18 countries, said it would work with the FDA to address the panel's decision.
