Kolkata: In a shocking case of medical negligence in West Bengal, a government hospital nurse accidentally chopped off an infant's finger while trying to take off a bandage. She then allegedly threw it in the dustbin to cover up the incident.
The eight-day-old baby was admitted to the Sick and Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU) in the District Hospital in Balurghat with diarrhoea on July 6. The baby's left palm was covered with bandage to administer saline. After the child's condition improved, a nurse was removing the bandage with a scissor but chopped off the thumb by mistake.
"The baby's finger fell on the ground. I started screaming. She washed the scissors, and threw the finger in the dustbin and went. I called my husband and the nurses instantly," recalls the mother of the infant.
The family has filed a complaint against the nurse. "We have filed a police diary and have the receipt copy. The diary was filed against the nurse. We could not get her name, but we do have the time. The time will lead us to the nurse who did this," infant's father Babla Mondal said.
The hospital accepted the error and the nurse has been sent on leave since the day the incident took place. "This was done by our staff nurse. Her name is Rakhi Sarkar. I told the superintendent to send the nurse on a leave. I created an enquiry committee, should get the report soon. I did not ignore the issue, it surrounds the sentiments of the baby's family," Chief Medical Officer of Health at the government hospital Sukumar De said.
Senior doctors visited the boy and sent him to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) at Siliguri to rejoin his severed thumb, De said.
Chief Mamata Banerjee has also ordered an inquiry into the case.
