KOCHI: The construction of the new railway overbridge (RoB) near the KSRTC bus station will begin on Sunday. The overbridge which will connect Rajaji Road with Salim Rajan Road is the first Metro Railrelated project to be implemented.
The proposed RoB is expected to ease traffic congestion that will arise out of the demolition of the North overbridge. The work on the new RoB has been entrusted with RDS Project Ltd and Cheriyan Varkey and Sons Ltd. Starting near the EPF Quarters on Salim Rajan Road, the RoB will be constructed over the railway track near Mullassery Canal Road and the land near the KSRTC garage gate at the end of Rajaji Road. The total length of the RoB will be 275 m with a width of 11.2 m, including the footpath. "The testpiling will begin on Sunday. In all, 25 pillars have to be erected for the RoB. Hundred workers will be employed for its construction. The work is expected to be completed in 18 months. The estimated cost of construction is Rs 19 crore," said an official of RDS Project Ltd.The KSRTC has already handed over 1.07 acres of land for the construction of the RoB. The authorities have already evicted three families from the area. They will be rehabilitated near Thrikkakkara. Since there is no need for further land acquisition, the project is expected to be completed on time.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ooommen Chandy will officially launch the Metro Railrelated projects on Saturday. Excise Minister K Babu will hand over the title deeds to the three families which were evicted for the construction of the RoB on Salim Rajan Road. They will be provided five cents of land each near Thrikkakara.
