BANGALORE: ‘Think Parallel: Parallel Programming for Engineers and Scientists’, a 10-day workshop which looks into the dynamics of the paradigm shift to parallel programming was inaugurated at the Centre of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in the city on Monday.Speaking on the occasion, Prof Govindarajan, Chairman of the Supercomputer Education and Research Center (SERC), said that programmers should now write programmes for parallel machines. He stated that 50 per cent of the top 500 super computers in the world have over 16,000 cores or more and emphasised on parallel programming. Adding to this, Sarat Chandra Babu, Executive Director of C-DAC, Bangalore addressed trainees and said, “Before you write programmes, you should think parallel.” He said that such training helps improve curriculum and skill sets. Adding that such vision should be applied to motivate and nurture teachers, he said that teachers learning from students and vice versa leads to a multiplier effect. The first of its kind workshop in India, it is very timely as several universities are now gearing up to create High Performance Computing (HPC) labs and curriculum. The training imparted to engineering teachers, scientists would help the teachers to gear-up to the needs of today and mould their academic programs such a way that they prepare their students for the future. He added that this training programme gives complete understanding of Parallel Programming techniques and state-of-the-art systems available in India and worldwide. This programme for teaching faculty of Engineering colleges is a mission ensuring a vast reach through the multiplier effect got by association with academia.
