This attack comes amid a tense atmosphere in Kolkata, where citizens are protesting the recent rape and murder of a woman doctor on duty at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) on August 9. The city has been gripped with outrage, with many taking to the streets demanding justice and stringent safety measures. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security and protection for women.

The protests have seen participation from prominent personalities across various fields. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who previously faced backlash for referring to the RGKMCH incident as a “stray incident,” joined a candlelight protest alongside his daughter Sana.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, who has been vocal about his concerns regarding the state of law and order in Bengal, joined the protests, stating that “rape has been used as a political weapon,” and calling for an end to the current system that he claims fosters such violence.

The protests have also seen significant participation from the Bengali film and music fraternity. Notable actors like Kaushik Sen, Saswata Chatterjee, Paoli Dam, and Churni Ganguly have taken to the streets to voice their support for the cause. From the music industry, figures such as Imon Chakraborty, Rupam Islam, and Mir Afsar Ali have joined the rallies, standing in solidarity with the victims.

Renowned director Srijit Mukherjee, who also participated in the protests, expressed his personal connection to the cause, mentioning his mother’s experiences as a doctor. “My mother is a doctor… that is why it is personal for me,” he said, emphasizing the need for stringent safety measures on campus to protect those who serve society selflessly.
