Cannes 2022: The Sari Is A Story I Will Never Stop Telling: Sabyasachi
The celebrated fashion designer draped actor and jury member Deepika Padukone in a couture sari at Cannes Film Festival 2022.

After garnering accolades for celebrating the sari at MET Gala 2022, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee took the six yards of sheer elegance to the red stairs of the 75th Cannes Film Festival 2022. Donning his Bengal tiger inspired couture sari was none other than actor and jury member Deepika Padukone.

The look which was styled by Shaleena Nathani and conceptualised by Sabyasachi, celebrated heritage Indian crafts and techniques through a modern lens.

The Indian sari has always been celebrated in the designer’s collections and this time too, there’s a story. Describing the exquisite sari inspired by the majestic Bengal tiger, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, says, “The sari is a story I will never stop telling. No matter where we are in the world, it has its place.”

Looking surreal in the black and gold sari, Deepika wore her stripes with pride on the red carpet. According to Sabyasachi, the stripes have been block printed and hand embroidered by some of India’s finest craftspeople at the brand’s atelier.

The couture sari, which is part of the iconic Aakash Tara collection, was paired with statement pieces from the Bengal Royale jewellery collection. The classic chandelier earrings complemented the headband, which paid homage to the traditional Indian matha patti headpiece with Art Nouveau detailing.

Draped by Vikas Rattu, Deepika’s hair and makeup was done by Yianni Tsapatori and Sandhya Shekar.

This was Deepika’s second Sabyasachi look for the day, earlier that day, the actor wore a printed Mysore silk shirt with a digital rendering of hand-painted vintage flora inspired by Company paintings made by the Sabyasachi Art Foundation, with Sabyasachi monogram buttons and paired it with pleated wool trousers.

Commenting on the outfit Deepika wore, Sabyasachi says, “I love that moment of storytelling where looking back at the past reveals the future. For me the best stories of India are always told in these moments.”

She adorned a deconstructed Maharani necklace crafted with multi-coloured gemstones and uncut diamonds. And accessorised with the Bengal tiger belt by Sabyasachi Accessories.

A contemporary take on Indian heritage, the designs were stylish, elegant, and complemented Deepika’s personality to the T.
