Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of India’s most vibrant and beloved festivals, celebrated with immense enthusiasm, particularly in Maharashtra. This festival, which honours the birth of Lord Ganesha, typically falls in August or September. The celebrations involve the installation of Ganesha idols in homes and public spaces, followed by rituals, singing devotional songs, and culminating in the immersion of the idols in water.
In 2024, Ganesh Chaturthi is set to begin on September 7, with the immersion of the idols scheduled for September 17. As the festival approaches, many devotees, especially those celebrating for the first time, may consider installing a Ganesha idol in their homes. To ensure the rituals are performed correctly, here are some important guidelines provided by astrologer Pandit Kalki Ram of Ayodhya.
Choosing a Ganesha Idol: When selecting an idol of Lord Ganesha, it is considered highly auspicious to choose one where the trunk of the deity is tilted to the left. A sitting Ganesha idol is also recommended as it symbolizes happiness and prosperity. Additionally, the idol should ideally depict one of Ganesha’s hands in a blessing pose and the other holding a modak, a sweet that is a favourite of the deity.
Direction of Installation: It is important to install the Ganesha idol in the northeast direction of your home, with the idol facing the north side. Begin by selecting a clean platform, covering it with a cloth, and then placing the idol on it. This positioning is believed to bring positive energy and blessings into the home.
Worship Rituals: After installing the idol, sprinkle pure Gangajal (holy water) and rice on the deity as part of the purification ritual. It is also necessary to place Riddhi and Siddhi, symbols of prosperity and spiritual power, alongside the idol. A vessel filled with water should be placed on the right side of the idol. Following these preparations, offer flowers, fruits, and sweets, especially modaks, to Lord Ganesha. Recite mantras and complete the worship with an aarti, a ritual of waving lighted lamps before the deity.
By following these instructions during Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees can invite the blessings of Lord Ganesha into their lives, bringing happiness, prosperity, and peace.
