One of the world’s oldest sharpshooters, 86-year-old Prakashi Tomar, fondly referred to as Shooter Dadi, is battling for her life. On September 17, Prakashi, who is suffering from cardiovascular ailments, was admitted to Noida’s Kailash Hospital, where doctors declared her condition to be critical.

Initially, Prakashi, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, was admitted to Noida’s Metro Hospital. However, unhappy with her treatment, Prakashi’s daughter had appealed to Noida BJP MP Dr Mahesh Sharma and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on social media site X to have her mother moved to Kailash Hospital, after which the administration facilitated the step.

Prakashi’s daughter Seema Tomar, who is also an ace shooter of international repute, said she was thankful to Mahesh Sharma who immediately made arrangements to shift her mother to Kailash Hospital. However, there has not been much improvement in Prakashi’s condition. On September 12, the 86-year-old’s family took her to the hospital as her health deteriorated. “My mother complained of high fever and uneasiness and we immediately rushed her to the hospital,“ said Ramveer Tomar, Prakashi’s son.

Prakashi, who hails from Johri village of Baghpat district, and her late sister-in-law Chandro Tomar started learning shooting in 1999 when they were in their 60s. They won over 25 medals each in several national and international championships. In their illustrious career, the duo also bagged the Stree Shakti Puraskar conferred by the then President of India Pranab Mukherjee. Prakashi was picked among 100 women achievers who contributed to nation-building and also bagged the Icon Lady award from the ministry of women and child development in 2017.

The “Shooter Dadi jodi” broke two years ago as Chandro Tomar died on April 30, 2021, at the age of 89. She was battling Covid-19 at a private hospital in Meerut.
