Swara Bhasker might have few projects in her filmography, yet she has always been considered as one of the finest actresses of the time. Swara began her film career with a supporting role in the 2009 drama Madholal Keep Walking, which did not perform well commercially. She later gained significant recognition for her supporting role in the 2011 romantic comedy-drama Tanu Weds Manu, which was a commercial success. Her performance in this film was praised by critics and earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. After a few more appearances, she started losing out on films. Recently, Swara Bhasker has opened up about the same and called her Twitter handle the most expensive thing in her life as it cost her career. Swara Bhasker has always been very vocal about political and social issues on her X (formerly Twitter) handle. Her bold and unabashed views often put her in trouble with those who did not agree with her. Swara believes this is the reason no one wants to cast her in films anymore, as they fear controversy.
In an interview, Swara Bhasker mentioned that many producers consider her “untouchable” in the industry. These comments were relayed to her by supportive friends, including producers and directors, who informed her that studios rejected casting her solely because of her name.
Swara recalled that a casting director told her that they often get a brief for “an actress like Swara Bhasker” but when she asks why they wouldn’t cast her, she is told, “They are like ‘no, controversies happen’. I don’t know what the fear is but there is a fear.” Swara mentioned that many people offer her support when they stop her on the streets or talk to her at airports, and she gains strength from this encouragement. There are also many individuals, including some of her well-wishers, who believe that she harmed her own prospects.
