Shekhar Suman and his son Adhyayan Suman are gearing up for the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a reputation for being short-tempered. Shekhar revealed that Adhyayan was scared of messing up in front of Sanjay that he locked himself in the bathroom and was “shitting throughout the night” before their first day of the shoot.
Shekhar Suman told Siddharth Kannan in a recent interview, “Have you heard of any boy who’s shitting all through the night? Yeh bathroom se nikla hi nahi jabse usko khabar aayi ki kal se shooting hai. He was shitting throughout the night. Thar Thar kaap rahe hain, he didn’t know what to do. Obviously, with these kinds of stories (about Sanjay Leela Bhansali being short-tempered) that he had heard, he thought, ‘Agar mujhse koi galati ho gayi? Agar main nahi kar paaya?’ Maine kahan kyu nahi kar paoge yaar? Be confident. Have faith in yourself. Jao aur dikhao karke kartab.”
Shekhar said that all night, he made Adhyayan practice his lines. The next day, when Adhyayan gave his takes in front of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and spoke Urdu, the filmmaker said that he must’ve learnt it from Shekhar. Speaking about his preparation before the first day, Adhyayan added, “Before that, till six in the morning I was with him (Shekhar). I was training with him, I was trying to learn the language. Main six hours mirror main dekh ke apne aap se baat kar raha tha.”
In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming series, Shekhar Suman brings Zulfiqar Ahmed to life, a character of authority whose very demeanour exudes power and sophistication. Adhyayan Suman embodies Zorawar Ali Khan, a wealthy and arrogant nawab whose actions are guided solely by self-interest.
The historical drama series will transport audiences to a time when courtesans reigned as monarchs. Through the stories of courtesans and their clients, set against the turbulent backdrop of the Indian Independence struggle in the 1940s, the series investigates the cultural reality of the namesake area of HeeraMandi.
Heeramandi is set for a release on May 1 on Netflix.
