Director Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila might have impressed fans but the film has disappointed Chamkila’s daughter Amandeep Kaur. In a new interview, Amandeep said she is upset with Imtiaz for not doing justice to her mother, Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur. The film, which starred Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead, featured Gurmail’s character in the film. However, Amandeep claimed the film omitted moments such as her performing the last rites.
Speaking with YouTube channel Switch, Amandeep said that she was five years old when Chamkila was shot dead. She added that the family shared a lot of information about Chamkila which Imtiaz did not include in the film. She also claimed that Gurmail performed the last rites and there is also a picture of the same. While the photo was included in the biopic, she hoped Imtiaz featured a proper scene for it.
“They showed everyone from Amarjot’s family, but no one from our family. My bua, chacha, no one was shown,” Amandeep told the channel. “We are upset with him. How could he do this?” she added. Amandeep added the family fought legal battles against Amarjot’s family over Chamkila’s property.
Meanwhile, in an interview with News18 Showsha, Imtiaz shared Gurmail’s reaction to the film. “After she saw the film with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, she told me that she loved it. She hugged me and cried. We all got emotional. Her feedback at that point was really positive,” he said.
Imtiaz also confirmed that Gurmail and Chamkila had a son after the singer married Amarjot. However, he did not include it in the film. “He had another child with Gurmail after having a child with Amarjot. The circumstance of that has been explained to me by Chamkila’s sister. I’ve it on record and I had written a scene about it also but had to cut it down because it was somehow a bit less relevant than the ones that were already there,” he said.
