Farhan Akhtar Suffered From Depression After Hrithik Roshan's Lakshya Tanked AT BO: ‘Yaar Kaise Ho Gaya’
Released in 2004, Lakshya captured the essence of resilience and identity through the character of Karan Shergill

Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta starrer Lakshya has completed 20 years recently and the makers shared a beautiful video recounting the moments. But did you know the film did not perform well at the box office? Yes, you are reading right. This was confirmed by director Farhan Akhtar and he also mentioned that after the debacle of the film, he also went into depression as he did not expect this.

In a conversation with Raj Shamani, Farhan mentioned that after the success of Dil Chahta Hai, he decided to make Lakshya. He put in a lot of effort but it did not go as it was planned. “Bachpan se sunte aa rahe hai dil se mahenat karo toh reward milega. I was convinced that in my entire life, I hadn’t worked so hard the way I did for this film. So when that film was released it didn’t do well. Mein itna depressed hua tha ki yaar kaise ho gaya? Itni mehnat meine ki, Dil Chahta Hai meine hardly mehnat ki thi. Dil Chahta Hai mein the hard work that I did was to cast the right people. I was so depressed it took me a year and a half to come out of that depression,” he was quoted saying.

Lakshya, which was released three years after Farhan Akhtar’s debut directorial Dil Chahta Hai, had a lot riding on it after the huge success of his first film. Although Lakshya failed to replicate the success of Dil Chahta Hai, it definitely made a mark as a coming-of-age story against a fictionalized backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War. Starring Hrithik Roshan in the lead, the film was released in 2004 and has now clocked 20 years.

Although Hrithik Roshan headlined the film, he wasn’t the first choice of director Farhan Akhtar for Lakshya. The role was initially offered to Arjun Rampal. However, since Arjun didn’t have the required dates to shoot the film, the role was offered to Hrithik.

The film also featured Preity Zinta, Boman Irani and Amitabh Bachchan in prominent roles. Even though the film had an impressive star cast, it earned below-par 230 million at the domestic box office and was declared ‘Flop’. However, over the years, the film amassed a cult following and is quite appreciated by Hrithik’s fans.

When film completed 20 years, the makers shared a video of Hrithik Roshan recounting his unforgettable experience with a caption: “Here’s to Friends, Film making, Fun & in a blink it’s #20yearsOfLakshya Back in theatres, 21st June onwards” Released in 2004, Lakshya captured the essence of resilience and identity through the character of Karan Shergill, a role that resonated deeply with Hrithik’s own journey.
