Govinda, one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved comedic actors, is celebrated for his iconic roles in films like Hero No. 1, Hadh Kar Di Aapne, Dulhe Raja, Coolie No. 1, and Partner. Known for his impeccable comic timing and vibrant screen presence, Govinda became a household name in the 1990s, especially through his collaborations with filmmaker David Dhawan. His journey in Bollywood is a testament to his versatility.
During a podcast interview with Maniesh Paul, Govinda shared an incredible story from the early days of his career. At just 21 years old, the actor had signed a staggering 75 films. Reflecting on this hectic period, Govinda said, “Main film line mein kahan aaya, mujhe film line thamai gayi thi. Upar wale ne film line di thi ki bhaiyya isse sambhaliye (I didn’t enter the film industry; God handed over the responsibility to manage it).”
Govinda also recounted a memorable conversation with the late legendary actor Dilip Kumar, who advised him to drop 25 of those films. When Govinda expressed concern about returning the signing amounts, Dilip Kumar reassured him, saying that God would help him manage it. Trusting the veteran actor’s wisdom, Govinda followed his advice and dropped the films.
The actor also revealed the toll that his packed schedule took on his health. He frequently fell ill on set and even went 16 days without sleep due to his relentless shooting schedule. Despite these challenges, Govinda’s dedication to his craft never wavered.
Govinda made his Bollywood debut in 1986 with Love 86 and quickly became a prominent figure in the industry. His other notable films from the 1980s include Ilzaam, Sada Suhagan, Dadagiri, Do Qaidi, Pyaar Karke Dekho, and Khudgarz. In the 1990s, he solidified his status as a comedic icon through his successful partnerships with David Dhawan. Govinda was last seen in the 2019 film Rangeela Raja.
