They may not always get the backing of big banners or the big stars to act in their films, but Indian Indies narrate some remarkable stories. Here is best of the lot from 2014. In the second edition of IBNLive Movie Awards, we select nominees in various popular categories and allow our readers to decide the outcome. Take our poll to vote and choose your favourite performers of 2014.
Here are the list of nominees:
1) Elizabeth Ekadashi: Director Paresh Mokashi's simple tale of a young boy and his struggle to take back his beloved bicycle 'Elizabeth' from a middle-man, struck a chord with the viewers for its innocent, simple story and brilliant acting.
2) Chotoder Chhobi: Kaushik Ganguly's brilliant and poignant film on the circus clowns and people who suffer from genetic disorder called dwarfism fetched the Best Actor award for the film's leading man Dulal Sarkar at the recent IFFI 2014. The film is primarily a love story in the backdrop of a circus.
3) Miss Lovely: Ashim Ahluwalia's film on the porn/b-grade film industry that thrived in the 1990s made an impressive debut at Cannes Film Festival last year and got a commercial release only in 2014.
4) Killa: Avinash Arun's Marathi film 'Killa' did the rounds of various film festivals in 2014 and was lauded for its technical aspects as well as acting. The 110-minute film, written by Arun along with Tushar Paranjape and Omkar Barve, portrays a difficult period in the life of young Chinu. He has a hard time settling into his new home in the countryside after his mother decides to relocate from the big city following his father's death.
5) Sulemani Keeda: Light hearted, fun yet poignant commentary on the lives of several struggling artists in Bollywood made for good viewing. Directed by Amit Masurkar, the film had some brilliant shots of Mumbai.
6) Filmistaan: Nitin Kakkar's film may have got a National Award in 2013 but it took a while for the director to find a distributor for this small film with a big heart. Set in Indo-Pak border near Rajasthan, the film truly celebrated the goodness of humanity which looks beyond religion and culture and also re affirmed the fact that when it comes to loving Bollywood, there is no border as such.
