Kalki Koechlin Feels Mental Conditioning Is Important To Battle Gender Inequality
Kalki Koechlin talks about 'Waiting', gender inequality, tabloid media and a lot more in this tell-all interview!

Actress Kalki Koechlin, who has carved her niche in the industry with the kind of roles that she has opted for so far believes that if given a chance to work in a Tamil or a French film, she would definitely be up for it, provided the script is right.

With a strong grip on these two languages, the ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ actress says, “If I get a chance to work in a Tamil or a French film, 100% I'll go for it. Since I don’t like dubbing for myself, any other language would be tough."

The actress who’ll next be seen in ‘Waiting’ also opened up about her work experience with Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor. Referring to them as a ‘bunch of friends’ she already knew, she said, “Rajat and I have worked a lot together, Naseer is great to learn from! We have a different way of working; we don’t really talk a lot about the roles. We had a kind of emotional intelligence between us which allowed us to know what the other person was thinking."

Kalki, 32, plays a modern advertising professional who encounters Mr Shah, an old school philosophy professor in a hospital as both the characters grapple with grief.

Never the one to shy away from expressing her opinions about trending topics, she spoke her mind about the concept of tabloid media and called it ‘shocking’. “I definitely think that the concept of tabloid media is shocking. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not but just about a shocking headline which catches people’s attention."

She also stressed on the fact that the audience should be a little more educated in terms of what real news is and should focus on other important issues that we don’t discuss or talk about. “Most of them are constructive stories that have got nothing to do with reality, so I’ve learnt to ignore them. Unfortunately, a lot of people take these things very seriously as they take it to be the ultimate truth."

Known for her bold views on feminism, the actress thinks that the discrimination is not a problem pertaining to cinema, but has been existing in the entire society since a long time now. “Nowhere in the world are women equal to men. How can we expect our writers or anything else to change unless we, as people, start changing? We don’t grow up thinking we're equal as children then how can we as adults start doing that? The change has to begin from the roots."

Directed by Anu Menon, ‘Waiting’ delves deeper into the themes of coping with grief and discovering hope.
