Marvel Studios captured everyone’s attention with a major revelation this year: Robert Downey Jr’s return to the superhero franchise, but this time in a villainous role. Known for his iconic portrayal of Iron Man, a character he bid farewell to in Avengers: Endgame after sacrificing himself to save the world, Downey Jr.’s return had seemed unlikely. However, Marvel Studios had different plans. At the recent Comic-Con event, it was announced that the Oscar-winning actor will reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the iconic supervillain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
RDJ also attended the event, unveiling himself in his signature Iron Man style onstage. However, this now brings up a lot of questions about the future of his iconic Avengers character. While Downey started in the franchise back in 2008 with his first Iron Man film, it was way before that he met to play Doctor Doom.
In a video that’s now gaining traction, director Jon Favreau discussed the making of the first MCU film with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. During the interaction, Favreau reveals that Downey has already been in the orbit of Doctor Doom.
“I remember that Robert had come in for a general meeting on Iron Man, and you had already met with him for Doctor Doom or something,” the director tells Feige, who was then executive producer on Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. As they continued reminiscing about their meeting, Favreau continued, “I remember sitting down with the guy, and I was like, ‘He’s got that spark in his eye, and he’s ready.’ That’s when we were in your office, and we were putting on his headshot and saying, we’ve gotta try and figure this out for Iron Man,” to which Fiege nodded in agreement.
However, it was Julian McMahon who ultimately secured the role of Doctor Doom in the 2005 film Fantastic Four. Now, years later, Robert Downey Jr. is finally getting his chance to portray the iconic supervillain.
What’s In For Iron Man’s Future?
While Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU return as Doctor Doom came as a surprise for all, speculations about Iron Man’s re-entry into another multiverse of magic have been around for years now. However, with Feige maintaining that they won’t “undo” it anyway after working hard for many years, it seems like the actor’s new role won’t impact Iron Man’s death at all.
Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo will be re-teaming up with Downy after 2019’s Endgame.
