Music Composer Gangai Amaran Reacts To Poet Vairamuthu's 'Controversial' Statements Against Ilaiyaraaja
Gangai Amaran has warned Vairamuthu that if he makes controversial comments about Ilayaraja in the future, he will face the consequences.

A recent statement by Tamil poet Vairamuthu against Ilaiyaraaja has ignited a heated debate, drawing a sharp response from veteran musician Gangai Amaran. Vairamuthu emphasised that along with music, poetry is also important for a film song, sparking a discussion on the role of both music and lyrics in creating impactful compositions.

While sharing a video, Ilaiyaraaja’s brother Gangai Amaran condemned Vairamuthu’s statements with some heated words and warned that if he insult Ilaiyaraaja from now on, he will have to face the consequences.

The Ilaiyaraaja-Vairamuthu duo, known for their collaborations in the 80s, worked together for 7 years and delivered many chart-topping hits. However, their relationship soured over time, leading to a prolonged silence between the two for over thirty years.

The recent debate intensified when Vairamuthu hinted at a dispute over song rights in a controversial statement at the music launch event of the movie Padikkadha Pakkangal held in Chennai, said, “What will happen if the lyricist also claims the rights to the song.”

Responding to Vairamuthu’s comments, Gangai Amaran released a video warning him against speaking ill of Ilaiyaraaja, indicating potential consequences. He also criticised Vairamuthu that no one in the Tamil film industry is as egotistical as him.

Amaran added that without Ilaiyaraaja, there would not be a Vairamuthu. If Ilaiyaraaja had not included his lyrics in Idhu Oru Ponmalai Pozhudhu from Nizhalgal, Vairamuthu would not have had the opportunity, the music composer’s brother said. “Vairamuthu is not a good man, even though he is a good poet. He forgot the man who helped him in his career and if he gives a controversial statement about Ilaiyaraaja, he would have to face severe consequences,” Gangai Amaran added.

In this matter, poet Vairamuthu posted on Twitter about the Finder film crew meeting him and highlighted the significance of lyrics in a film.

Gangai Amaran started his career as a lyricist with the film 16 Vayathinile in 1977 and has worked as a music composer, singer, lyricist, writer, actor and film director in Tamil films.
