In an ironic turn of events, Hollywood star Tom Cruise is facing a very Mission Impossible style of identity theft but not with the typical face mask. With the help of advancement in technology and easy access to deep fake creating software, one TikTok account led fans to believe that the 58-year-old actor is on the social media platform.
It has been reported that a new TikTok account that goes by the username ‘DeepTomCruise’ has surprised many fans with a deepfake version of the Hollywood actor. The user has uploaded just three videos until now that have garnered over 11 million views and one million likes. In these uncanny videos, fakeCruise is seen playing golf, embarrassingly falling on the floor, and doing magic tricks.
In his first video that was shared on February 22, 2021, the fake Tom Cruise asks his viewers who are at home if they are “cool” with him playing “some sports.” This follows him flashing a cheeky grin and throwing on a sun hat and practicing his golf swing as he adjusts his golf stick and his stance and hitting the ball. The video was shared on Twitter by a user named Lauren White who expressed her concern over the deepfake video and wrote that every public figure should be on social media with a verified account, even if they do not want to make content,so that it is easier to differentiate between what is real and what is not.
Deep fakes are getting scary good and taking over TikTok. Every public figure should just be on there with a verified account – even if they don’t want to make content – to make it easier to identify their fakes. In another video, the fake Cruise is seen falling on the ground embarrassingly but soon gets up and shares an imaginary anecdote from the time when he supposedly met former Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev. However, if you are a trueCruise fan, you would notice a slight difference in the voice and some parts where the creator’s lip-syncing is a bit out of sync.
See this video of Tom Cruise?Well, it’s not Tom Cruise.
It’s AI generated synthetic media that portrays Tom Cruise onto a TikTok user using Deepfakes.
