Prominent South actor Ranjith got embroiled in a controversy after he made a shocking statement on honour killing, seemingly defending the heinous practice. It is being reported that the actor is receiving a lot of criticism for his words. As per the reports, on August 9, he interacted with the media in Salem, Tamil Nadu, after a screening of his recently released film, Kavundampalayam, where he made the statement. Ranjith was asked about the practice of honour killing by the reporters. To this, he replied that it is just how parents express their love towards children. He stated, “Only parents know the pain. If a bike gets stolen, won’t we go and see what happened? Those parents for whom life is all about their children get angry and show it. It is not violence, it’s just their care for them.”
Ranjith had visited Salem to watch a screening of Kavundampalayam with the audience, at a theatre in Karuppur. His words have set off a wave of criticisms from the public and the social media. His statement was made at a time when appeals are being made by the public to come up with a law for honour killing practice, to the authorities.
Before this, he came under fire for his comments on women’s clothing and dancing, which were related to Happy Streets, shows conducted on streets. His new film Kavundampalayam also explores sensitive topics like caste-based violence and parental control on kids.
Kavundampalayam is directed by Ranjith and was released on July 5. The cast includes Ranjith, B Alfia, Imman Annachi and A Anish, who are seen as the leads. The actor was last seen in Adhibar, a 2015 Tamil-release directed by Surya Prakash. The cast starred names like Jeevan, Vidya Pradeep, Nandha, Samuthirakani, Ranjith among many others. It was produced by PB Saravanan and T Sivakumar under the banner of Benn Consortium. It was released on August 28, 2015.
