Tumbbad (2018), which had released as a flop, has now become a sensation in the film industry.

Tumbbad (2018), which had released as a flop, has now become a sensation in the film industry. After its re-release on 13th September, it outperformed even new films in terms of collections and audience turnout. In just 10 days, the film has raked in Rs 22.63 crores by its second Monday, adding to its original Rs 12 crore collection, bringing the total to Rs 34 crores. The film is expected to continue its run, potentially reaching a whopping Rs 40 crores, earning multiple times its budget in profits.

On Monday, Tumbbad broke the record held by Ghilli, becoming the highest-grossing re-release in India since 2000. Ghilli had earned 26.50 crores, but Tumbbad surpassed it with 26.70 crores. It had already beaten re-releases like Sholay 3D (13 crores) and Laila Majnu (11.50 crores), and now holds the top spot.

With profits already 140% over its budget, Tumbbad is set to go global, with a deal for overseas theatrical rights in progress. Its success shows it was ahead of its time, as audiences were not ready for its unique style back in 2018.

Before to re-release, expressing his excitement about the sequel, Sohum Shah told IANS, “Tumbbad has been a special journey and a labour of love for us, and to see the love it continues to receive is overwhelming and only ratifies our belief and ethos of Sohum Shah Films, that content is king. With Tumbbad 2, we want to push the cinematic experience and boundaries even further. Tumbbad 2 will take audiences deeper into the world we’ve created, with bigger twists and a more intense exploration of what happens when greed knows no limits.”

Sohum Shah released a new trailer for the re-release. The trailer gave a glimpse of haunting visuals fans can expect from the film, and he also shared the official re-release date. Sharing the post on Instagram, Sohum wrote, “Sacchai, acchai, burai aur lalach, har yug mein inhi ki kahaniyan dohrayee jaati hain, aisi hi ek kahani dohrane ka samay phir aa gaya hai. Tumbbad Re-release Trailer Out Now. Experience Tumbbad in cinemas again on 13th September, 2024.”
