The film, by Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as whistleblower Edward Snowden, with Nicolas Cage, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Scott Eastwood, Joely Richardson, and Timothy Olyphant rounding out the all-star cast.

Stone also had a hand in penning the movie script, which is based on both the book "The Snowden Files" by Guardian journalist Luke Harding, and "Time of the Octopus" by Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

The film is scheduled to be released in North America on September 16, 2016.
