Kishore Kumar was the first choice for songs in Rajesh Khanna’s films during the 1970s and 1980s. It is often said because of his voice, Rajesh Khanna became a superstar. As per reports, Kishore Kumar lent his voice to Rajesh Khanna in hundreds of films. They became an iconic pair and Kishore Kumar ruled the film industry as the voice of Rajesh Khanna. Along with this, their friendship was also very famous in Bollywood. But once Kishore Kumar refused to sing a song in Rajesh Khanna’s film, which made him very nervous.

The 1970s blockbuster film Dushman was scheduled to hit screens on January 7, 1972. The song that Kishore Kumar refused to sing is titled Vaada Tera Vaada which became a chartbuster. It was a foot-tapping song, and even today, the audience loves that qawwali.

Film journalist and writer Chaitanya Padukone shared in an interview that Laxmikant Pyarelal, who composed the music for the film, had said that when Kishore Kumar was asked to sing the song Vaada Tera Vaada, he refused, saying that it suited Mohammad Rafi’s voice more.

As soon as Rajesh Khanna came to know about this, he met Kishore Kumar and made him understand. Kishore Kumar was firm in his decision. Even after being explained by Rajesh Khanna, he was not ready to sing the song.

Reportedly, an idea came to Laxmikantji-Pyarelala’s mind, they very politely told Kishore Kumar that if he did not sing the song, it would not be used in the film. Rajesh Khanna also shared the same opinion. Hearing this, Kishore Kumar finally agreed to the song. He sang the song, and it became a super hit when the movie was released.

Dushman was produced by Premji and directed by Dulal Guha. It is based on a novel by Virendra Sharma. The film starred Rajesh Khanna in the title role, for which he received a Filmfare nomination as Best Actor. While it also featured Meena Kumari, Mumtaz, Bindu, Rehman, Asit Sen and Johnny Walker in other pivotal roles.
