Shekhar Suman is an actor who never cared about being in the rat race or in the top league. Yet he remained relevant to the film industry. He dabbled with both television and cinema. Shekhar Suman achieved more success in TV. He appeared in some classic 1990s serials like Reporter, Dekh Bhai Dekh and own chat show, Movers and Shakers. Shekhar Suman entered the world of acting with a significant role in the erotic drama Utsav that also starred Shashi Kapoor and Rekha. The movie was directed by Girish Karnad and produced by Shashi Kapoor. In a media interview last year, Shekhar Suman revealed that it was senior actress Shammi who convinced Shashi Kapoor and Girish Karnad to cast Shekhar Suman, then aged just 21. It had been only 15 days since he came to Mumbai and after just a 15-minute meeting, Shekhar Suman got the lead character in this film. Shekhar Suman had to perform several intimate scenes with Rekha in his first film itself and it gave him recognition overnight.
Shekhar Suman could not become a top league star though and appeared in just about 35 films, mostly in supporting roles. His filmography includes Manav Hatya, Naache Mayuri, Sansar, Anubhav, Tridev, Pati Parmeshwar, Chor Machaye Shor and Ranbhoomi.
Shekhar Suman found more success in television with serials like Reporter and Dekh Bhai Dekh, both telecast on Doordarshan being extremely popular with the youngsters of that era. His chat show Movers and Shakers, which blended comedy with chit chat with a guest, was the first of its kind on Indian television. He was one of the judges of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge along with Navjot Singh Sidhu, quitting after three seasons over differences with his co-host. He featured as a judge on several other comedy shows such as Comedy Circus on Sony TV and Comedy Superstar on SAB TV
He most recently appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.
