Shah Rukh Khan aka the Badshah of Bollywood needs no introduction. Today, November 2, marks his 58th birthday. As an annual ritual, he stepped out at midnight of his birthday eve to greet hundreds of fans who gathered outside his Mumbai residence, Mannat. Do you know there is an interesting story about why SRK was prompted to purchase Mannat? It is an extravagant bungalow with a net worth of Rs 200 crore. In an earlier radio interview, SRK revealed that he purchased Mannat because his mother-in-law, Savita Chhibber found his initial place, a penthouse very small.
SRK said in that interview, “I am from Delhi. Delhiites are used to living in big houses. But in Mumbai, there is a concept of living in an apartment. Even if one is not rich in Delhi, he tries to buy a small bungalow.” He continued, “When I came to Mumbai, I lived in a small apartment with my wife Gauri. My mother-in-law used to say to me, ‘How do you live in such a small house’?”. SRK’s mother-in-law also hails from Delhi.
Shah Rukh then said that when he saw Mannat, the first thing that struck his mind was that this resembled the houses in Delhi. “I decided to buy Mannat on the spur of the moment,” he said.
Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan have been married for over 30 years now. They are one of the most celebrated married couples in Bollywood today. There was a time, however, when Gauri’s parents weren’t so keen on her decision to marry Shah Rukh Khan.
In an interview in 2008, Gauri spoke about the same and said her parents were “obviously not in for it.” Gauri was only 21 when she tied the knot with Shah Rukh, who was 26 at the time. “We were so young and then I decided to get married to a person who is going to join films, and from a different religion,” she told costume designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla on their show, First Ladies.
