Dr Santosh Kumar Dora, a Senior Cardiologist at the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, provided insights to News18 regarding the potential risks associated with excessive exercise. Dr Dora explained that when the body is pushed beyond its limits without adequate rest and recovery, it can heighten the risk of developing cardiovascular conditions, such as myocardial damage, cardiac arrhythmias, and increased vulnerability to infections. He also pointed out that vigorous exercise can temporarily disrupt the heart’s electrical system, leading to arrhythmias or abnormal heart rhythms. In some cases, excessive exercise may even result in more serious conditions, including atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.

Dr Dora emphasised the importance of adopting safe exercise practices and provided key recommendations, including:

1. Incorporating Rest Days: Allowing your body adequate time to recover is essential. Rest days are crucial for muscle repair, hormonal balance, and overall cardiovascular health.

2. Monitoring for Overtraining: Signs of overtraining may include persistent fatigue, an elevated resting heart rate, or reduced performance. If you experience these symptoms, it’s important to take a break and allow your body sufficient time to recuperate.

3. Staying Hydrated: Proper hydration is vital for optimal heart function. Drinking water before, during, and after exercise helps maintain the right fluid balance.

4. Balanced Exercise Routine: A well-rounded exercise regimen should encompass various activities, combining cardiovascular exercises with flexibility training, low-impact workouts, and strength training to reduce strain on the heart and joints.

5. Being Mindful of Warning Signs: If you encounter chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dizziness, or palpitations during or after exercise, it is imperative to seek immediate medical attention.

Dr Dora concluded by highlighting that while intensive exercise is often associated with health benefits, it is equally crucial to acknowledge the potential risks it can pose to the heart. He strongly advised seeking guidance from healthcare experts before making any significant modifications to an exercise program.
