As many as 33 people were rescued after a major fire broke out at Rail View MIG Society located in the New Tilak Nagar area of Mumbai’s suburban Chembur area on Saturday afternoon. The fire at a 12-storey residential was doused after three hours and there were no reports of anyone getting injured, said an official.

The fire brigade received a call about the incident at around 2.43 pm and it was completely doused by 5.50 pm, the official added. The fire was declared level 2. Two fire engines, a jumbo water tanker and an ambulance were sent to the spot for relief and rescue efforts.

Around 33 people were rescued from various places such are parapet walls, rooms, terraces and staircases. Fire has been brought under control, BMC said, according to news agency ANI.

As per an official, it was a basement-plus-stilt-plus-12 storied building where the fire was reported. The flames were confined to electrical wiring, garbage and dumped household materials inside an open duct extending from the ground to the top floor and the wooden door at the terrace level, he said.

The staircase was filled with smoke and fire brigade personnel rescued 33 persons including some who were stranded on ledges outside the windows, he said.

The exact reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained, the official added.
