A 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for threatening to carry out a terror attack at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. The man, who identified himself as Irfan Sheikh, claimed to be a member of the banned terror outfit Indian Mujahideen, police said.

Following the call, Mumbai airport authorities immediately alerted the police and a special team was formed, which nabbed the accused from the Govandi area with the help of technical surveillance.

According to a preliminary probe, the accused was inspired by a web series. However, the police are investigating the case from all angles.

Police also suspect that the accused could be mentally unstable or was acting at someone else’s behest as he changed his statement a few times.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at Sahar police station under relevant Indian Penal Code sections including 505 (I) (causing alarm or fear by spreading false rumour).
