Sanjay Dutt’s Role In The 1998 Film Dushman Was Rejected By These 5 Stars
Sanjay Dutt’s role as a blind army officer received much appreciation in the film.

Do you remember the psychotic character Gokul Pandit from the 1998-film Dushman? Bollywood actor Ashutosh Rana depicted the role with such passion and intensity, that the audience was left stunned. This character completely changed Ashutosh Rana’s image in Bollywood; and it earned him his Best Villain award at the 44th Filmfare Awards too. In an interview this year, the film’s lead actress Kajol said, “One of the scariest films I have ever said yes to or even watched for that matter is Dushman.” Sanjay Dutt’s role as a blind man received much appreciation in the film as well. Did you know this role came to him after many superstars of Bollywood rejected it?

Dushman was directed by Tanuja Chandra. It starred Sanjay Dutt and Kajol in the lead roles. The movie was released in 1998 and was a remake of the Hollywood film, Eye For An Eye. Kajol plays a double role in the movie, where her extroverted twin sister gets murdered. The introverted sister seeks revenge from the killer, Gokul Pandit. Sanjay Dutt plays the role of a blind army officer who helps the sister to seek justice. Before Sanjay Dutt was offered the role, the movie was rejected by Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Bobby Deol, Arbaaz Khan and Ajay Devgn.

None of them agreed to the role. There were reports that before Kajol was signed up, her role was offered to Manisha Koirala. Reportedly, Kajol did not want to do the movie initially, but later secured her place in the hearts of the audience with this role. If the reports are anything to go by, then Kajol was quite hesitant in doing the rape scene and was not ready for it. A body double was used for the scene. She even thanked Pooja Bhatt and Tanuja Chandra for making her comfortable with such an uncomfortable topic. The actress confessed recently that it is still an uncomfortable film for her to watch.

Ashutosh Rana poured his life into the character of the villain with his physical features, body language and husky voice.
