For a long time now, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah fans have been waiting for Dayaben’s comeback. Disha Vakani, who used to play the role of Daya Jethalal Gada in Asit Kumarr Modi’s show, went on indefinite maternity leave in 2017 and has not returned since then. While Asit Modi has repeatedly shared that they are hunting for a new Dayaben, in a recent interview, Monaz Mevawalla revealed that she has no idea about it. Mevawalla recently joined TMKOC as Roshan Sodhi.
“I really do not have any idea about it,” she told Bollywood Life.
This comes days after ‘Boycott TMKOC’ was trending on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter) as viewers expressed disappointment because of Dayaben’s absence. While some claimed that the show might go off-air soon, Asit Modi later issued a statement and clarified that reports claiming so are false. He also mentioned that even though it is taking time, the character of Dayaben will be back soon.
“I’m here to entertain my audience and I will never lie to my viewers. Only due to certain circumstances, we are unable to bring Daya’s character back on time. But, that does not mean that the character is not going to enter the show at all! Whether it is Disha Vakani or someone else, the time will tell. But, it’s my promise to the audience that Daya will be back, and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is going nowhere. It is not an easy task to run a comedy show for fifteen years. It is one of a kind, which has not witnessed a single leap,” the statement read.
Earlier this year too, Asit Modi issued a statement when TMKOC completed 15 years and announced that he would be soon bringing back fans’ favourite Dayaben. “In this journey of 15 years, a hearty congratulations to all of them. One such artist is whom we cannot forget. That artist is Daya Bhabhi aka Disha Vakani. She has entertained the fans and also made us laugh for all these years. Fans have been waiting for her to come back and I promise you all that Disha Vakani will soon be back to Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah,” he said.
