Virat Kohli has the chance to surpass 3 more records currently held by Sachin Tendulkar when he will play in the World Cup 2023 semifinal between India and New Zealand.

Virat Kohli recently equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record 49th ODI century against South Africa, as the 35-year-old became only the second player after Master Blaster to score 49 hundreds in the fifty-over format. Over the years, Kohli has had incredible success, he has created many records and surpassed numerous milestones, many of which belonged to great names including Tendulkar.

Similarly, when India take on New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup Kohli will have an opportunity to surpass three more records of the legendary Indian opener.

India will lock horns with familiar foes New Zealand in a repeat of the 2019 semifinal, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. While the top priority of the entire team will be to move past the semifinal barrier, which they have failed to do since the 2011 World Cup, there will be a bit of individual glory as well, up for grabs.

Against New Zealand, Kohli has the opportunity to surpass three separate records, currently held by Sachin Tendulkar.

The first is to go past Tendulkar’s feat of 49 ODI centuries, Kohli has the opportunity to become the player with most ODI tons if he can score a hundred versus New Zealand, which would be his number 50. The second record is Sachin’s tally for most runs scored in a single edition of World Cup, whereas the third record will be most fifty plus scores in a single edition of the World Cup.

Virat Kohli is currently level with the Master Blaster for most centuries (49) in the format, if he can score his 50th ODI ton against New Zealand, he will become the first player to do so.

Furthermore, Sachin also holds the record for most runs score in a single edition of ODI World Cup, Tendulkar scored 673 runs in 11 matches at the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. Virat currently has 594 runs, he needs six runs to go past the 600-run mark, and 80 runs to move past the Master Blaster’s illustrious feat.

Furthermore, with his half century against the Netherlands, Virat Kohli equalled Sachin Tendulkar and Shakib Al Hasan’s record for most fifty plus scores in a single edition of World Cup at 7, another fifty plus score will see him become the player with most fifty plus scores in a single edition of the tournament.
