Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede surpassed his father Tim de Leede, to become the leading wicket-taker for the Dutch side in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. As if the moment couldn’t be any more special, the Dutchman got the better of Indian captain Rohit Sharma in what proved to be a key breakthrough in the game.
India locked horns with the Netherlands as the two sides looked to end the World Cup group stage on a high at Bengaluru on Sunday. Rohit had earlier won the toss and he elected to bat first, after which Shubman Gill smashed a half-century to give India an explosive start.
After Gill’s departure on 51, Rohit continued the assault, the Hitman surpassed multiple milestones and looked well-set to play a big knock but Bas de Leede had other ideas.

The wicket was De Leede’s 15 dismissal at the ODI World Cup 2023, while his father Tim had picked up 14 wickets in as many matches, having played in three ODI World Cups in 1996, 2003 and 2007 as well. However, Bas overtook his father in just nine games having earlier picked up a four-wicket haul against Pakistan.
When it comes to the overall highest wicket takers for the Netherlands in ODI cricket, Bas de Leede is sixth on the list which is led by Mudassar Bukhari, while former Dutch captain Pieter Seelaar, Ryan ten Doeschate, Peter Borren and Logan van Beek are the top five highest wicket takers for the Dutch.

Bas dismissed Rohit and helped Netherlands give a brief relief, however, shortly afterwards Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer smashed their respective fifties to continue their assault on Dutch bowlers.
It was a commanding display from the Indian batters in Bengaluru as the top five batters, Shubman, Rohit, Virat, Iyer and KL Rahul all smashed half-centuries.
