In Congress’ first list of 144 candidates released on Sunday for the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections on November 17, Awadesh Nayak has been fielded for Datia, which is said to be the home turf of home minister and BJP’s firebrand leader Narottam Mishra.
Nayak recently switched from BJP to Congress in presence of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee president and former chief minister Kamal Nath. Nayak along with supporters had left for Bhopal to join the Congress and to also display show of strength.
In 2003, Nayak fought on a BJP ticket, but lost with few votes. Since he is said to be close aide of former CM Uma Bharti, he also switched to Bharatiya Janshakti Party and fought election in 2008, but lost.
In 2008, Narottam Mishra contested from Datia seat for the first time and has been an MLA ever since. Earlier, he was MLA from Dabra. He grew with each passing election and is now one of the faces for the chief ministerial position in Madhya Pradesh.
In 2009, Nayak came back to the BJP during the Lok Sabha Elections but after few years he felt sidelined by sitting MLA.
Now that Nayak will contest against Mishra from Datia on a Congress ticket, he is expected to attract thousands of Brahmin votes in the constituency.
Nayak is said to be game changer in Datia as there is high intensity anti-incumbency against Mishra.
This is the fourth time Mishra is contesting from the seat. In last assembly elections, Mishra won out of just few votes which was as low as 2,656.
