Career Wise: Unlike many other sports, equestrianism involves an intricate partnership with another sentient being - the horse. This partnership necessitates a significant investment of time to establish a strong rapport

The concept of pursuing sports as a viable career choice is steadily gaining traction in India, and this trend seamlessly extends to equestrian sports as well. For individuals who dream of forging a career in this dynamic field, starting early is often the key. Unlike many other sports, equestrianism involves an intricate partnership with another sentient being—the horse. This partnership necessitates a significant investment of time to establish a strong rapport.

Initiating riding lessons and horsemanship training at a young age equips individuals with fundamental skills and knowledge. This early exposure fosters a profound connection with horses, which is paramount in understanding their needs and behavior. However, a genuine passion for these magnificent animals is an indispensable prerequisite for a successful equestrian career. Furthermore, to ascend to the pinnacle of this profession, financial support and sponsorships frequently play pivotal roles. These resources can grant access to top-tier riding schools and international opportunities. Nevertheless, even without substantial financial backing, pathways to success exist.

In India, equestrian careers often rely on practical experience and references from reputable stables. Although there are no formal equestrian courses in India at present, some riding schools conduct their training and certification programmes for instructors.

Exploring Equestrian Career Options

Within the realm of equestrian sports, there are primarily three distinctive career tracks: rider, instructor, and stable manager.

Rider: The primary duty of a rider is to exercise the horse and prepare it for competitions. Typically, riders work under the guidance of experienced trainers to hone their equestrian skills. In terms of remuneration, an experienced rider could get between Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 per month, depending on their skills and performance on ground.

Instructor: Instructors are responsible for overseeing the entire riding lesson process, from ensuring proper equipment usage to overseeing mounting and dismounting. Effective communication skills are indispensable for instructing students. Instructor roles are typically categorized into three levels: beginner, senior, and highly experienced, with salaries varying accordingly. Compensation ranges from approximately Rs 30,000 to 70,000 per month, with senior instructors commanding higher earnings. Additionally, instructors may earn commissions from clients. For foreign coaches in the senior or highly experienced category, monthly earnings range from Rs 2 to 3 lakhs, compared to Indian instructors who earn between Rs 1 to 1.5 lakhs. It’s important to note that the pay package is commensurate with the rider’s experience; more years of experience translates to better compensation.

Stable Manager: For individuals who may not excel as riders but possess a profound connection with horses, stable management presents a viable career option. Stable managers play a pivotal role in ensuring the overall well-being of horses. Their responsibilities include supervising horse care, ensuring access to water, managing daily routines, and ensuring grooms fulfill their duties. The salary for a stable manager typically ranges from Rs 25,000 to 45,000 per month.

Currently, the equestrian industry in India faces a shortage of highly qualified instructors. Remarkable athletes like Ashish Limaye and Fouaad Mirza, who have excelled in the sport, are trailblazing a path for more opportunities and recognition in the country. As the equestrian community continues to expand, the demand for skilled professionals will undoubtedly increase.
